At the University of Memphis, where Stephen Tabachnick has served as a professor of English since 2000, he teaches courses on 19th and 20th century British literature, including drama, and the international graphic novel. Dr. Tabachnick received his Ph.D. in 1971 at the University of Connecticut with a dissertation on “T.E. Lawrence’s Seven Pillars of Wisdom as a Work of Art.”. Dr. Tabachnick has numerous publications, including a book about Charles M. Doughty, Lawrence’s mentor. He has edited Teaching the Graphic Novel, a collection of 34 essays published by the Modern Language Association of America in 2009, and is the author of The Quest for Jewish Belief and Identity in the Graphic Novel, which was published by the University of Alabama Press in 2014. Bringing together his two major interests, he spoke on “Lawrence of Arabia in the Comics” at a Huntington Library Lawrence symposium in 2007. Dr. Tabachnick is an enthusiastic opera- and play-goer.
