Chaplin – The Musical

At long last Tel Aviv has a new theatre, solely dedicated to musicals. While the idea is tantalizing, the execution is still far from satisfactory. Chaplin – The Musical is the second production put on stage at the refurbished venue on Weisman street, and it is not the best choice of material one could hope for. The 2006 musical by Thomas Meehan and Christopher Curtis was poorly received on Broadway, and the Israeli production doesn’t discover any hidden treasures in the book that unfolds like a Wikipedia page, lacking in emotion and devoid of big laughs. And the songs? Chaplin himself composed better music for his films, and it’s a pity the lackluster score doesn’t reference it.

It is never a good idea to try and cover a person’s whole life, especially a famous person such as Charlie Chaplin, in a limited text such as a film or a play. The second half of the musical, in which we are presented with a villain in the form or gossip columnist Hedda Hopper – who targeted Chaplin for being a communist with a preference for underaged girls -gives us an idea that a drama focusing on this particular animosity could make for a more interesting evening. Though Hopper’s character too was not well written – it seems that the only reason she went for Chaplin’s neck was the fact that he refused to be interviewed on her radio show – Miki Kam, the one true diva on the stage, elevated every scene she was in. Kam even managed to make the unmemorable tunes sound great, discharging her huge, deep, one of a kind voice.

The rest of the musical had no drama whatsoever – just a series of well documented stations in the life of the British born funnyman who became a true visionary of the new art of the cinema. Pop singer Dafna Dekel in the role of the mentally unstable mother he left behind couldn’t give any emotional weight to her thinly drawn character, who keeps popping up in his memories. Yaron Brovinsky was pleasant as his loving brother Sidney, and Avi Grayinik was underused as Hollywood producer Mack Sennett who gave Chaplin his first contract. Ingenue Meital Notik had graceful presence and a lovely voice as the young Una O’Neill who chooses to love Chaplin despite his faults. But we are only told about these faults, we don’t get to witness them, and therefore their scenes together don’t ring true. In the title role Ofri Biterman manages only a rough mimicry of the tramp’s movements and gestures but none of his grace. And as Charlie he mostly yelled his lines, without ever creating a fully realized character.

The set design by Lily Ben Nachshon wasn’t particularly inventive, with a movie screen in the background supplying some not very convincing images of faux silent films. There was quite a lot of dancing, nicely choreographed by Omer Zimri, but the execution was lacking in precision. Also, the fact that half of the male dancers in the chorus had designer stubble was jarring as it didn’t fit the period. Under Shuki Wagner’s direction, the whole thing felt a bit off, with some nice ideas (the use of Chaplin puppets in one scene) thrown into the mess. The whole thing was originally conceived as an end of year production at the Yoram Levinstein acting studio, and it shows.

Yael’s summary in Hebrew of her review
