The City ( העיר הזאת)

The City is a modern Hebrew-language rap musical detective thriller, written by the local Jerusalem band “The Victor Jackson Show”. Its is a masterpiece of hip-hop poetry slam, with the stereotype of a film noir detective story as the plot background. The plot is not the strongest part of this show, but the subtle text of the lyrics and the excellent singing performances are notable.

The lead character, a detective, Joe, is a cynical half-drunk private investigator. The opening scene is a meeting in his office on a stormy night with a mysterious and attractive femme fatale Sarah Bennet, who comes asking for help after her sister has gone missing. Joe knows no good will come of this soaking-wet angel, yet he can not help himself and takes her to bed.
Next morning, Jack, Joe’s detective partner, receives a phone call informing him a corpse has been found. Together with Joe they start a complicated and fruitless investigation which leads to a conflict between Joe and Jack, who eventually leaves and is mysteriously murdered. Sarah Bennet disappears, and Joe finds himself in the hands of the corrupt police, as the only suspect for a double murder, and is awaiting the hangman’s noose. Only his wits and a “deus ex machina” can save him now.

The city in which this play takes place has no name, but there are some clues and very depressing attributes are supplied. Street names hint to an Israeli city (Borochov and Hashaked St) but the overall impression is of a large American city (probably L.A.). It is compared by Joe to a ship, sailing wherever the wind will take it.

The play is staged in the Mazia House theater in the up-and-coming Nachlaot neighborhood. The crowd was young and vibrant with an unusual mix of secular, modern orthodox Jews and Arabs sitting together. The performance included great music and poetry, and a very subtle and neat delivery. Amit Ulman (Joe) and Dorit Lilien (Sarah Bennet) gave an outstanding performance in the lead roles.

The plot is the weakest part of the show, but nevertheless, it was a memorable and most enjoyable night. This fringe play has already been running for five years and it seems that it will go on for a while. Despite its age, it is still something new and refreshing which attracts a young audience to the theatre.
