King Kong (a comedy)

The Vaults theatre is located very near waterloo station. Even with its proximity, it was rather hard to find, due to the combination of road works and side streets, but we got there in the end. The theatre itself is funky and cool, giving every play a tasteful and unique edge.

The play is based on the classic film, King Kong, released in 1933 after the successful ‘King Kong’ novel published in 1932. The play is a spoof of the film and throughout, elements of slapstick prevail. Unfortunately, after the first 20 minutes the jokes became dry and unfunny, with repetition of jokes leaving the aspect of comedy quite far away. However, the play was light and easy, and so would provide a fun night out with friends. In addition to this, the play is kid friendly, and all ages would understand the jokes.

One thing that did stand out in the play was the main character. Rob Crouch who plays Carl Denham – the film maker and explorer who hunts out King Kong- is played very well. He fits the character completely, mixing his rumbunctious character and his naivety. His is a stand out performance when the flay begins to flag.

Overall, the play is light and fun, yet does not give much else. If you are looking for a thought provoking play, I do not think that this is the play for you. However, that is not to say that the play was unenjoyable, the main character was played very well, and no doubt there were some funny moments. So if you are looking for a relaxed night out with friends, this is the place to go.
