Alan Cumming’s ‘Sappy Songs’ at The Hub is a treat from start to finish. A consummate entertainer, Cumming regales with tall and no so tall tales about his life, his soldier grandfather, his father, his time in America….and oh, that time when he met Liza Minelli.

Backed by musical trio Lance Horne on piano, Eleanor Norton on cello and Stuart Semple on drums, Cumming effortlessly moves from Annie Lennox to Miley Cyrus, Stephen Sondheim to Rufus Wainwright. His rendition of ‘Dinner at Eight’ dedicated to his violent father is lacquered in irony.

Cumming, charming and provocative, is in compelling form. ‘Sappy Songs’ is a sell-out show but queue for returns. You are guaranteed a journey of splendid highs in ‘Club Cumming.’ While cumming down is something even the Edinburgh wind-whip can’t achieve.
