La marchenera is the third title of the 23rd Oviedo Festival of Lyric Spanish Theatre. In spite of the long history of this festival, this is the first time that this zarzuela can be heard in Oviedo, continuing the effort of recovering forgotten works of Spanish lyrical heritage.

This production shows a semi-staged version of this zarzuela grande in which the elements that form the set are quite scarce. One of the most striking aspects of this production is this adaptation from the original work, made by the stage director and playwright Javier de Dios, in order to facilitate the public the access to a play so little performed, while he also contextualizes it in the time it was created, the decade of the 20s.

To managed that, he has added two characters, a businessman who tries to save his theater from bankruptcy and a young librettist looking for an opportunity, who write the libretto while they imagine how the story unfolds and the singers appear in the stage dressed in evening gowns in black color. Both characters tell us the plot of La marchenera: a story of love and jealousy that takes place in an idealized Andalusia, specifically in Marchena in 1842, in which the main character is Paloma, a young woman in love with Don Félix, a “donjuán” who is also sincerely in love with her. The Count of Hinojares, who protects Paloma like a daughter, is a nobleman who supports the liberal cause and that meet others conspirators at the Paloma’s aunt tavern. Don Félix suspects that there is a relationship between Paloma and the Count, and decides to take revenge by seducing the Count’s daughter, Valentina.

This version deserves to be praised because of the difficulty of making such adaptation, as well as for the creativity shown when devising this new way of “theater within the theater”, but the fact is that this way of explaining the original just managed to complicate it even more, by adding to the main argument, devious in itself, a subplot based on the zarzuela creating process. Although, the advantage provided by this version is saving significant costs of scenery and costumes that are required for the staging of a zarzuela of this magnitude, this resource does not succeed in transmitting the essence of the play and it would be necessary to provide something more in order to allow the spectator to enjoy the costumbrismo and colorful joy that La marchenera possesses, and that is present in all of its musical scenes, although it is important to emphasize the great performance of the actors Fernando Sansegundo (Blas Cantero, the businessman) and David Ávila (Serafín Brado, the librettist), who created two endearing characters with some outstanding comic moments.

While the libretto of this zarzuela presents a story that could be considered unoriginal, the play is enhanced by the beauty of its melodies, of which the conductor Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez knew how to make the most out of them, with a precise and enthusiastic musical direction.

About the performers, it should be noted the quality of some of the voices, especially the male ones, among which stood out the baritone Carlos Álvarez (Conde de Hijonares) for his elegant voice and presence, especially in the romanza that introduces his character, “Caballero veinticuatro”, one of the most celebrated moments. His rival, Don Felix, was played by the tenor Sergio Escobar, who prove to have a powerful voice, though perhaps with too much momentum in the final highs.

In the female roles, the soprano Susana Cordón (Paloma) knew how to overcome  the main character with grace and personality, despite of the tessitura difficulties, that demand a voice with much more ability and skill to undertake the deep and middle passages. The soprano Rocío Ignacio (Valentina) offered a painstaking interpretation, particularly in the romanza “Tres horas antes del día”, one of the best known of this zarzuela.
