Napoleon – Dead or Alive

Napoleon – Dead or Alive is a modern reproduction by the director Udi Ben Moshe of the well-known musical by Nisim Aloni, one of the most famous playwrights in the history of Israeli Theater. Music is by Keren Peles and Gary Bertini. This play, as is typical in Aloni’s works, is an illusionary fantastic-historical parody, featuring the infamous French emperor of the early 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte and clown figures from the Italian “Commedia del’Arte” in a danse macabre masquerade. Aloni never lets us forget that we are in the theatre, and emphasizes it throughout the play

The plot shows how Napoleon Bonaparte escapes from the underworld of the dead, to return to the nineteenth century to prevent his living self from making the great mistake of invading Russia (in 1812). He is pursued by the demons Samedi and Lilith (who themselves have a complicated love-hate relationship), eager to bring him back where he belongs. To achieve their goal, they scatter fake Napoleons throughout Europe, attempting to confuse and exhaust the dead man’s spirit.

Meanwhile the Venetian Emilio Pantalone (a clown from the Commedia del’Arte), a bereaved Father, who lost three Sons in the Napoleonic Wars, hires the Neapolitan assassin Don Brighella (also a clown) to bring him Napoleon, alive or dead, so he may have his revenge; and in return he promises to wed Don Brighella to his only living daughter.

Hereupon the quest begins: Don Brighella, in pursuit of the real emperor Napoleon and the dead Napoleon on his tracks, hoping to find his living self. But the quest soon turns into confusion with all the fake Napoleons and the other characters they encounter. The real Napoleon is never to be found, and that is exactly the metaphor of this play: Napoleon, the iconic nineteenth-century general, represents an endless pursuit of an unaccomplished ambition….

The play features many scenes, with a rich variety of scenery, artifacts, costumes and atmosphere. All contribute to the illusion and insanity of the Napoleonic Wars, which the play is all about. Meta-theatrical effects include a portable curtain that appears numerous times, together with two storytellers, addressing the audience directly at every new scene and location. Also, the lily- flowers scene, representing dead soldiers, was very impressive.

The actors perform very well, with Erez Shafrir (Dead Napoleon) and Yossi Eini (Don Brighella) in the leading roles. Nili Rogel deserves an exceptionally high rating for her femme fatale role as the demon Queen Lilith. I did however find the play to be too long, and too incoherent. with too many scenes and characters that create a mish-mash on stage and completely shatter the plot (though in the case of Nisim Aloni this is rather the point). Ben Moshe makes an impressive attempt to re-stage this difficult Israeli classic, but I am not sure he is successful. Yet, we may conclude the play, in the words of Samedi the demon: “Only here, in the theatre, every evening after the curtain falls, the dead come back to life … they remove the knife from their heart, clean the blood and remove the makeup … Only here”.
