Maya Amir
in conversation with Rivka Jacobson

Maya Amir, a young Mezzo-Soprano, is a rising star. We first met in Tel Aviv, in a café facing the Israeli Opera House, near her rehearsal location. A tall young woman walked into the cafe with a confident stride and a warm smile. I heard a recording of her singing and was taken aback by her voice.

Maya’s two elder brothers adore her. Gad, the younger of the two brothers, is a talented guitarist and a singer. Gad established two bands of classic rock and blues in which he occasionally sings. Her mother, Aviva, recalls with pride, ‘I brought an audiotape to the delivery room and gave birth to Maya to the sound of Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp.’ Maya claims to this day that thanks to this exposure she has “perfect pitch”.

Her family roots can be traced as far back as Spain, prior to the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. As a musicologist colleague commented, after hearing her voice and seeing her picture, ‘she’ll make an excellent Carmen‘.

Musical family

Her maternal grandmother, Margalit is 8th generation in Tiberias with roots in the picturesque ancient city of Tzfat (Safed), situated in Upper Galilee, Israel. Grandma Margalit takes full credit for discovering Maya’s musical talent. ‘My grandma sang in gigs during the British Mandate in Palestine,’ says Maya with a smile. ‘I owe her everything. She sang to me as a baby and encouraged my singing. According to my grandma’s recollection, she would sing to me, and I would sing back from the age of nine months. I would repeat notes in ‘la la la’ carrying the lower register with perfect accuracy. I could carry a tune from an early age. My grandma claimed to be the first to spot my musical talent. She is an amazing character,’ adds Maya affectionately.

Music goes far back in the family’s history. Maya’s mother, Aviva, composes poems and lyrics herself, while her daughter performs these compositions. Aviva recalls that her great-grandfather, Yechiel, was also a very gifted musician. He would supplement his income by playing and singing at weddings. His wife and their children (sons and daughters, alike) would be encouraged to sing and play a musical instrument. One of his sons, Joseph, nurtured Margalit’s musical talent. He took her to sing with him in weddings, Bar Mitzvah, and family gatherings. ‘Margalit’s voice was mellifluous, rich, and vibrant’ says Aviva Amir.

Three generations: Maya’s mother Aviva, Maya, and grandma Margalit

The young Maya attended Kibbutz Ginosar Elementary School. The music teacher in charge of its Children’s Choir spotted the eight-year-old Maya’s musical talent and advised her parents to invest in developing that talent. They did.

From Leipzig to Basel

Thanks to a DAAD Scholarship, Maya studied at The University of Music and Theatre ‘Hochschule für Musik und Theatre’ in Leipzig, Germany. There Maya gained her master’s degree in Opera Singing.  The countertenor Andreas Scholl suggested she study in Basel at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (which specialises in vocal & instrumental ensemble) and be coached by Professor Rosa Dominguez, the Argentinean mezzo-soprano, an expert on Baroque repertoire who teaches there.  ‘Professor Dominguez heard a recording of my singing and immediately agreed to coach me.’ says Maya.

Maya completed her MA in June 2021, under the guidance of the indispensable Rosa Dominguez.

‘Rosa is a true voice coach and the most amazing teacher I have ever met. She reads the student from A to Z, allows the person she is training to be as much themselves as possible, and does not compromise on it in any way. Rosa immediately understood me and worked with me on my inner self more than producing a “beautiful sound”.  It’s only when a person is entirely in tune with his or her inner tones, that the sound they produce is really something new that they invent, something that stimulates and excites the listener,’ says Maya with fervour.

‘With Rosa, I learned Baroque music and its styles and varieties, which I didn’t learn with any other teacher. I learned how to sing the right kind of trill, how to sing recitative to meet the composer’s intentions as exactly as possible, which is often not truly respected or expected in the way historical works are performed today. I learned to pronounce the Italian language properly and accurately without compromising the clear syllables and consonants. I do the same for other languages. Rosa treats the composer’s text as sacred.  We, the singers, live and feed on text,’ explains Maya.

‘The physical support, called the Appoggio, literally means ‘support’, and the posture of the body has a huge impact on the way the sound is produced and for that, I’ve worked a lot with my teacher, and that’s the emphasis I when teaching myself. During my degree course, I taught students in Switzerland and Israel and even replaced a teacher, for an entire semester, in a voice development course at the Schola Cantorum, where I taught five musicians who elected the voice development course as an option.  It was an empowering and constructive experience for me. I somehow feel that teaching singing makes me a better singer,’ Amir says thoughtfully.

‘I really think that my studies in Basel helped my musical maturity and understanding of myself and my abilities to process music to the extent that I’m able to convey it, while I constantly keep learning.

Travelling extensively is part and parcel of being a performing artist. Amir understands that and appreciates that a new location means a new audience. ‘Every place has its audience and its energy.’ She explains.

Maya recalls an amazing experience that happened last summer in Estonia at the Tartu Early Music Festival where she performed with the Barrocade Ensemble. ‘Something special happened that I hadn’t experienced before. At the end of my performance of Vivaldi’s Agitata da due venti (‘shaken by two winds’), the audience rose to their feet and applauded loudly. It was a supreme experience.  It was all so special because despite the fact that this was the third concert of the tour, I was finding travelling exhausting, and I was in the midst of menstruation, yet I still managed to excite the audience and triggered a fantastic standing ovation.’

There are moments on stage of sheer magic where the whole audience is with you. I felt it in the performance of Vivaldi’s “Vedro con mio diletto” and I feel like I own the audience.’

She continued, “That aria is my personal story and the audience feels it. On our tour in Estonia, at the end of the show I was approached by a woman with tears in her eyes. She asked if she could hug me. When you know that you have touched people’s emotions you realise the enormity of the impact music can sometimes have. I cherish such moments.”

From Estonia to Paris, Maya performs with leading ensembles.  Currently, she is collaborating with the countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, in his programme ‘Promoting Tchaikovsky at the La Seine in Paris’. Jaroussky is a renowned musician,  an asteroid has been named after him. A wax figure of him sculpted by Éric Saint-Chaffray was inaugurated at the Musée Grévinin Paris (modeled on Madame Tussauds in London).  In July 2021 she performed at four festivals in Estonia, with the Israeli baroque ensemble Barrocade, conducted by Anders Mustonen.

Maya warmly reflects on the special professional bond she has with the conductor and violinist Anders Mustonen.  ‘It was from the first concert in which I performed with his baroque orchestra known as Barrocade Ensemble, when we worked on Vivaldi’s Magnificat, together with singer Ye’ela Avital, in December 2019 that we clicked. Anders heard my voice and we immediately connected. It was like a hand in a glove. It’s most gratifying for a singer to work with a conductor with whom one clicks professionally and with whom one has total rapport. That affinity offers the necessary confidence a performer needs on stage.  I connected directly to the wonderful energy Anders radiates. He’s a man full of fire, love, and joy in making music. Anders’ dynamic interpretation of Vivaldi’s arias challenges and takes with him the orchestra and therefore serves me as a singer. It gives me the perfect tempo and it is attuned to the dynamic and expressions I want to give the piece.’

A brief glimpse into Maya’s forward fortnightly diary, during the pandemic and despite all restrictions, makes one confident that this young lady will be climbing high mountains to the very top in her professional career. It was only last week that she sang the lead role in Scarlatti’s opera Il Trionfo dell`Onore in a Baroque Festival in Basel, and this week she sings with the Barrocade Ensemble at the Abu Gosh Festival in a ‘Viva Vivaldi’ concert.  As soon as the matinee concert is over, she flies to Normandy International Baroque Music Competition at the Chapelle Corneille, in Rouen, and then from France, she will wing her way to the USA, to sing at the Lieder/Song vocal competition presented in Association with the Liederkranz Foundation.  To cope with all the stress and Covid restrictions some projects need to be cancelled and occasionally insomnia kicks in.

When Maya is not rehearsing or performing, she enjoys spending time with her fiancé. They both love horse-riding, kayaking, and sailing to exotic locations.
