The Crazy Coqs never fails to ignite a sense of anticipation for a great show and a fun evening and “The Life and Loves of a Broadway Baby: An Evening with Melissa Errico” certainly delivers on that promise- particularly for die-hard Broadway fans.

The Tony nominated, Melissa Errico, as expected, shines in her performance, whether it be her powerhouse vocals, commanding stage presence or boundless energy. She skilfully utilizes the intimate setting, captivating the audience from the moment she enters with pure charm. During the show she effortlessly weaves personal anecdotes and direct interaction with the audience, creating a connection which elevates the experience. While some moments may appear rehearsed it’s Melissa’s unwavering love for Broadway, the chosen composers, and her authentic connection to these songs that truly shine through.

Melissa’s autobiographical set is full of emotion and passion. Her freedom and playfulness with classic Broadway tunes and beloved ballads, infused with some jazz and her personality is pure joy. The sheer power and emotional depths of ballads such as Loesser’s “Luck be a Lady Tonight” and the mix of Gershwin and Heyward’s “Summertime” and Bergman’s “The Windmills of your Mind” are breath-taking. On stage with here is James Pearson on Piano, Sam Burgess on Bass, Chriss Higgenbottom on Drums and Graeme Blevins on Sax/Flute.

The show features some deeply moving moments but can effortlessly transition to light-hearted and fun, especially when a special guest, Isabelle George, takes the stage alongside Melissa. Isabelle is full of joy and fill’s the audience with joy as show showcases her vocals and wins over new fans with her delight in performing and incredible talent. The harmonious blend of Isabelle’s powerful voice with Melissa’s is fantastic and results in duets that range from poignant to playful, accompanied by tap dancing that adds a layer of joy.

The Life and Loves of a Broadway Baby is a great way to spend an evening filled with Broadway magic. Melissa takes you on a journey of important moments in her career and life. Would an average theatre goer enjoy this show? It’s possible they won’t. But a die-hard Broadway fan, familiar with classic works of big composers will have a great evening watching Melissa’s take.
