The mesmerizing performance captivates the audience with a thrilling tribute to Sicilian puppetry, specifically the UNESCO-protected Opera dei Pupi heritage. With just four puppets operated by Giacomo Cuticchio, Tania Giordano, and Giuseppe Graffeo—three skilled puppet masters—and two hand-painted backdrops for a single scene change, the show pulses with the rich, timeless spirit of the Opera dei Pupi tradition. This modest showcase offers an enchanting glimpse into the Cuticchio family’s enduring commitment to this beloved art form, evoking the grandeur of epic storytelling with a touch of magic and meticulous craftsmanship.

Dating back to the 19th century in Sicily, Opera dei Pupi typically features tales of chivalry, with regional variations in narrative focus and themes. The Cuticchio family, rooted in Palermo, has kept alive the epic tales of Charlemagne and his Paladins, blending classic techniques with fresh interpretations. In this performance, the puppeteers present a two-scene adaptation from the poem Orlando Innamorato (Orlando in Love) by Matteo Maria Boiardo. In the opening scene, the Paladin Orlando embarks on a quest for his beloved Princess Angelica, fearlessly confronting and slaying a poisonous snake. A distant cry for help leads him to a maiden abducted by a giant thief. Unaware of her identity, Orlando engages in a fierce duel and ultimately triumphs. When the grateful maiden kneels before him, he joyfully realizes she is his beloved Angelica, culminating in their happy reunion.

Though the plot is straightforward, the skilful hands of the puppeteers and their meticulous attention to character detail infuse the performance with profound emotional impact. The puppets are primarily maneuverer using two iron rods, with additional strings for characters like Orlando. This design allows the puppeteers to achieve precise articulation and complex movements. The dynamic motions are enhanced by various movable parts, including joints and limbs. It’s incredible to see Orlando’s flexibility as he unsheathes his sword and raises his helmet visor.

Giacomo Cuticchio, the puppeteer portraying Orlando, also serves as the sole speaking voice and sound designer, tailoring each character’s voice and orchestrating sound effects. The distinct vocal timbres emphasize the emotional textures rather than creating a sense of make-believe. For instance, Orlando’s rich baritone resonates with a subtle tremolo. Cuticchio’s tapping feet not only create sound effects, like galloping horses, but also add a rhythmic beat that heightens the atmosphere. Though the performance is in Italian, the audience receives a brief plot overview in English before the show. The intense expressions and emotions of the puppeteers, along with their intricately handcrafted puppets and props, transcend language barriers, immersing the audience in timeless themes of love, valour, and adventure.

Opera dei Pupi has been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This designation celebrates this unique art form and encourages efforts to pass these significant traditions on to future generations. The Cuticchio family continues to refine their puppetry repertoire to ensure that Opera dei Pupi resonates with contemporary audiences while preserving its rich heritage. Don’t miss the chance to be captivated by this remarkable art form—it’s a true celebration of heritage that will leave you inspired!
